The Ecosystem of Change: Understanding Pride Foundation’s Role in Movement Work

At Pride Foundation, we know that lasting change comes through the combined efforts of people and groups working together toward a shared vision. Across our region, people are working in many ways to support one another:

  • Grassroots organizers mobilize communities and respond quickly to emerging needs.
  • Direct service providers offer care, support, and essential resources.
  • Advocacy organizations work to change policies and the systems that shape people’s daily lives.
  • Cultural workers and storytellers help shift narratives and expand what people believe is possible.

Each role is distinct, but they are deeply interconnected. Together, they form an ecosystem that allows LGBTQ+ communities to adapt, grow, and sustain momentum over time.

Pride Foundation is part of this ecosystem. As a foundation serving LGBTQ+ people across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, our role is to steward resources, support community leadership, and strengthen the infrastructure that helps this work endure over time.

In this post, we’re sharing more about how foundations work and how Pride Foundation’s role fits into the broader landscape of our movement.

How Foundations Work

Foundations are institutions that collect and distribute philanthropic resources to support nonprofit and community-led work. They differ in structure, focus, and approach — from private family foundations to regionally rooted community foundations to issue-based funders. These distinctions influence how decisions are made, how funds are distributed, and how foundations engage with the communities they support.

Community Foundations

A community foundation is an organization that pools donations from multiple sources including individuals, families, and businesses, to support local charitable projects and nonprofit organizations.

Unlike private foundations or single-issue nonprofits, community foundations are rooted in specific geographic areas and work across many aspects of community life, helping steward resources so they can respond to both immediate needs and long-term priorities.

At their core, community foundations work with donors who want to invest in their communities, directing those resources to organizations and initiatives making meaningful impact. This often includes:

  • funding local nonprofits and grassroots organizations
  • supporting scholarships and leadership development
  • strengthening community-based initiatives and networks
  • convening partners to address shared challenges
  • investing in long-term community well-being

Community foundations often take a long-term approach to philanthropy. They build relationships over time, respond to changing community needs, and can provide stability in moments of uncertainty.

Social Justice Foundations: A Different Approach to Giving

There are other types of public foundations that emphasize social justice philanthropy over traditional models of philanthropic practice.

At its core, social justice philanthropy focuses on addressing the root causes of social, racial, economic, gender, and environmental inequities and prioritizes investing in long-term change over temporary relief.

This approach also recognizes that communities most impacted by injustice are also best positioned to identify solutions. Instead of directing change from the top down, social justice philanthropy seeks to shift power and decision-making toward those directly affected, a long-held practice that is now often referred to as Trust-Based Philanthropy.

In practice, this often includes:

  • Providing multi-year, general operating support so organizations can plan and adapt over time
  • Reducing unnecessary restrictions and reporting burdens, recognizing community leaders as experts
  • Partnering in solidarity, contributing relationships, knowledge, and networks alongside financial resources
  • Aligning internal policies and investments with stated social justice values

Social justice philanthropy approaches giving as a partnership in building more just systems. It recognizes that wealth and opportunity are not distributed equally — and that foundations can use their resources to expand equity through how they invest and steward funds.

In movement work, this role is less visible than organizing or advocacy but remains essential. By helping ensure that resources flow where they are most needed, social justice philanthropy serves as part of the infrastructure that fuels social justice movements.

Understanding this framework helps clarify how different foundations approach their work and provides important context for how Pride Foundation operates within the broader philanthropic landscape.

Pride Foundation’s Role

As a community foundation rooted in the Northwest whose mission is grounded in social justice, Pride Foundation works at the intersection of these two approaches. Our role is to help strengthen our communities by investing in organizations that advance equity and justice for LGBTQ+ people across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Our work is based in social justice philanthropy, and we are committed to:

  • Harnessing our fundraising, grantmaking, program, and advocacy efforts to address root causes of discrimination impacting the LGBTQ+ community
  • Supporting community leaders and organizations that work to eliminate long-standing barriers to equal access, opportunities, and resources for LGBTQ+ people
  • Expanding and deepening the level of engagement among all LGBTQ+ people and allies, including people who are economically, racially, socially, geographically, or politically disenfranchised

Pride Foundation doesn’t replace frontline organizations or provide direct services in place of local providers. Our role is not to direct the work, but to listen, invest, and support — helping ensure that the people and organizations closest to the work have the resources they need to lead.

We do this in several ways:

  • Funding LGBTQ+ led and focused grassroots organizations — especially those working with and in communities that have been most harmed by systemic injustices
  • Providing scholarships and leadership support for LGBTQ+ students
  • Supporting advocacy and community education efforts that advance our movement through policies, initiatives, and legislation
  • Investing in long-term capacity and sustainability, helping organizations plan beyond moments of crisis through multi-year funding and capacity “beyond the check”
  • Connecting donors with community priorities, ensuring generosity is guided by lived experience and local knowledge
  • Strengthening regional relationships and networks that allow collaboration and shared learning

Investing in Collective Impact

Strengthening communities is collective work. It depends on organizers, educators, advocates, neighbors, and leaders showing up for one another — and it also depends on the resources that make this work sustainable over time.

By pooling resources, raising funds, and investing them where they are most needed, Pride Foundation helps transform individual contributions into collective impact.

Giving through Pride Foundation can also simplify the process for donors, offering flexible ways to support community priorities, respond to emerging needs, and sustain organizations doing critical work across our region. It allows donors to invest not just in a single issue or moment, but in the long-term sustainability and leadership that movements require. Together, this shared commitment helps build communities where LGBTQ+ people can live safely and openly as our full selves in all the places we call home.

Each of us has a role to play in strengthening our communities. Whether you support local organizations, advocate for equitable policies, volunteer your time, share stories that expand understanding, or contribute resources that sustain this work, your participation helps strengthen the ecosystem that allows LGBTQ+ communities to thrive.
